Endow the future

Gifts made through regular donations and through our sustaining donor plan fund our work today. But for those who are interested in supporting Inter Pares' work into the future, gifts can be made to our endowment fund, the Margaret Fleming McKay Fund.

The Margaret Fleming McKay Fund

In 1995, Margaret Fleming McKay, a long-time supporter, offered Inter Pares a large gift to be invested for use in the future. Acknowledging her desire to support the next generation of social justice activists, Inter Pares inaugurated the Margaret Fleming McKay Fund, a fund to which gifts received are invested for a minimum of ten years.

A social worker for 25 years, Margaret had direct knowledge of the injustices and challenges facing marginalized people in Canada. In her latter years, her memory of those experiences continued to underlie her commitment to social justice. Margaret became a donor to Inter Pares in 1987, in large part because of her concern for the status of women globally. She told us, "I've always been interested in the fact that women did most of the work in the Third World, and that their lives were so difficult." Stories her grandchildren brought back from their travels through Africa, about the burden women shoulder, and about their central role in their communities, confirmed for Margaret that the struggles of women continue. In 2005, Margaret passed away, leaving Inter Pares with the memory of her values and with the stewardship of part of her legacy.

The Margaret Fleming McKay Fund has three important objectives: to contribute to Inter Pares' independence in developing innovative, creative and cutting-edge programming; to facilitate long-term planning by providing a reliable and growing source of income; and to protect Inter Pares against excessive reliance on government support in periods of declining public funding. Most importantly for our donors, the Margaret Fleming McKay Fund offers them a means of ensuring that their vision and dreams for social justice will continue long into the future.

Inter Pares' Investment Policy* for gifts to the Margaret Fleming McKay Fund is framed to ensure that what we do with the money entrusted to us is consistent with our social justice mission. Our investment policy reflects our analysis of the root causes of poverty and injustice, and complements and supports program efforts to address them.

The Margaret Fleming McKay Fund – with new gifts and interest – has been growing for several years now.
