As international aid retreats, Sudanese women lead the way forward.

Sudan’s women are the first to respond.

Women are holding Sudanese communities together as war drives the world’s largest displacement and hunger crisis. Brutal conflict has displaced more than 12 million people. Many mothers are raising children in overcrowded camps without reliable food, safety or care. Violence, especially against women, girls and LGBTQI+ people, is widespread.

As costs rise, governments are slashing global aid budgets. But grassroots organizers, many of them women, are doing what institutions have failed to do: keeping communities safe and alive in Sudan.

Care is an act of resistance.

Before the war, Ilham supported survivors of gender-based violence. Today, she leads a team delivering food and mental and physical health care.

“Rape, harassment and exploitation have been used extensively,” she says of the war. “Survivors are left without support.”

Reham supports displaced queer and trans people. When her funding disappeared, she kept working—unpaid—so her community could access life-saving trauma counselling.

What does it mean to care during a crisis?

Ongoing conflict has destroyed people’s access to clean water and food. Hospitals, schools and transportation systems have been severely damaged or destroyed.

Caring for communities in these conditions demands grit and determination. It means being flexible and creative. It is showing up to keep communities safe and alive.

Ilham and Reham are doing all of this—and you can help them.
