In 2025, governments around the world slashed international aid budgets. These cuts devastated organizations doing important work—including some of the social justice organizations we work with in Guatemala, Sudan and Burma.

Now, they are left facing extraordinary challenges—war, displacement—with even less resources.

But across the world, there is unwavering support. A connection, a lifeline with the global community. It’s Inter Pares’ community of supporters.

Read our counterparts’ stories, below and learn how you too can be a lifeline of unwavering support.

Inter Pares is helping counterparts to fill the gap left behind by funding cuts. And you can, too. Will you join us in being a lifeline of unwavering support? Every dollar donated from now until the end of the year will be matched—doubling your impact.

Dr. Cynthia Maung and Inter Pares: Providing health care amidst the war in Burma

In Burma, our counterparts are incredible. They provide care to almost half a million people in rural and remote areas of Burma, amidst ongoing civil war.

Earlier this year, our counterparts were hit hard by yet another crisis: U.S.-based funding cuts—40 per cent of their funds gone overnight.

“When the funding stopped, it not only affected services at Mae Tao Clinic, it affected the whole population we reach out to: people in the refugee camps, migrant workers and people affected by conflict displaced on the Thailand side,” shares Dr. Cynthia Maung, founder of long-time Inter Pares counterpart Mae Tao Clinic, that has provided health care to displaces people along the Thailand-Burma border for more than 35 years.

The funding cuts mean there isn’t enough money for basic medicines or supplies. Plans for critical upgrades and improvements to clinics have been called off. Organizations are laying off staff or reducing salaries, when health workers are already on the verge of burnout from the unrelenting pace of treating conflict-related injuries.

“About 2 million people in the border region need humanitarian assistance urgently,” emphasizes Dr. Cynthia.

“We are frontline service providers—we have to respond, no matter the lack of funding. But we can’t do it alone.”

Will you make a gift today to support Dr. Cynthia and her colleagues to continue delivering lifesaving care in Burma? Inter Pares counterparts’ health services are often the only way people in Burma can access medical care.

Carlos and Inter Pares: Advocating for LGBTQI+ rights in Guatemala

“This situation was very difficult for us,” reflects Carlos Valdés, Executive Director at Asociación LAMBDA, our counterpart.

“We had already committed to do certain things... As a civil society organization, we are not prepared to absorb this loss.”

Asociación LAMBDA provides LGBTQI+ people with psychosocial care, legal support, medical follow-up, safe spaces and more. When the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) shuttered earlier this year, LAMBDA lost funding that would have supported life-saving gender-affirming care for 900 trans people.

“2026 is a totally uncertain year,” shares Carlos, “Unfortunately, we don't know what's going to happen. There are no exclusive funds for LGBTQI+ [issues].”

Will you make a gift today to support Carlos and his colleagues?

Your donation will bring more certainty and stability to Asociación LAMBDA—and will ensure they can continue to support LGBTQI+ folks in 2026.

Reham and Inter Pares: Protecting LGBTQI+ refugees from Sudan

Reham* leads a Sudanese human rights organization that supports LGBTQI+ communities. The ongoing war has forced millions to flee Sudan. When the fighting reached her city, she and her team scattered across the region—but their work continued.

And then came another big blow: the U.S. abruptly cut off aid funding for Reham’s organization.

Thousands of dollars for Reham’s work and community, gone overnight. The cuts were a devastating shock.

When the funding disappeared, Reham kept going without a paycheque—advocating, organizing and offering support to those who have nowhere else to turn.

“Even if I need to make sacrifices, I do it so the work can continue,” Reham says.

Will you give a gift today to support Reham? Your donation would be a lifeline.

How can you be a lifeline of unwavering support?

Your gift this holiday season will support counterparts to carry on their important work—even while governments slash their foreign aid budgets.

And remember: every gift is being matched, doubling your impact.

Your gift doubled this month

Former Inter Pares Board member and long-time supporter Doug Ward is matching all gifts to Inter Pares this month, up to $20,000!

We asked Doug what inspired his generosity. This is what he said:

"Inter Pares has an impressive decades-long record of finding and connecting social justice movements and then accompanying them along the rocky road to progress. That is solidarity. I support Inter Pares because I care about social justice, and I know social justice is not given freely by governments. We need a strong citizens’ movement to hold government’s hand to the fire, if we want to make substantial progress both in Canada and abroad. Inter Pares knows that.”

This month, be a lifeline of unwavering support.
