Women and Girls in Sudan: What’s next? is a report based on unpublished research from the Sudanese Organization for Research and Development (SORD).

In 2025, SORD, an Inter Pares counterpart organization, documented consultations with 157 women across six Sudanese states and several refugee communities in Uganda.

SORD conducted their research in the context of the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Since April 2023, the warring parties have displaced millions and escalated gender-based violence (GBV).

SORD's consultations found that most women are unaware of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, a landmark resolution on women, peace and security that acknowledges the disproportionate impact of armed conflict on women and girls and reaffirms women's role in peace, urges their equal participation and calls for protection from gender-based violence in conflict. At the same time, the women consulted continue to lead community-based caregiving, advocacy and peacebuilding efforts. Despite this, women remain excluded from formal decision-making due to insecurity, resource scarcity and entrenched patriarchal norms.

Echoing the calls from SORD’s unpublished research, Women and Girls in Sudan: What’s next? calls for a feminist peace agenda that promotes women’s leadership, accountability for GBV and women’s economic empowerment. It urges greater collaboration among grassroots women’s movements, national institutions and international organizations to advance inclusive and sustainable peace in Sudan.
