About Inter Pares
What is Inter Pares?
Inter Pares (Latin for “among equals”) is a Canadian nonprofit organization, based in Ottawa. We were founded in 1975 to address structural inequalities around the world. Far from the traditional colonial aid model, we work instead in solidarity with more than 70 social justice organizations around the world—including in Canada—to promote equality, social justice, food sovereignty and human rights.

How is Inter Pares different from other international development NGOs?
Inter Pares focuses on addressing the root causes of injustice and inequality. We believe in solidarity, not charity when it comes to international cooperation. We nurture long-term collaboration—sometimes for decades—with locally-led organizations that define their own priorities and strategies. We have built a network of 70+ partnerships grounded in equality with civil society organizations leading change efforts in their own communities.
What is a "feminist approach" to social justice issues?
We see the world through a feminist lens. It’s about analyzing power—who has it, who doesn’t and why. It means recognizing that patriarchy and misogyny are global issues that intersect with racism and economic exploitation. Our feminist approach isn’t just about “helping women.” It’s about challenging the deep-seated power structures that keep people marginalized and ensuring that those most affected are the ones making decisions that affect their lives.
Why does Inter Pares work on issues within Canada as well as internationally?
Injustice doesn’t stop at borders, and neither does our responsibility. Canadian policies drive many of the root causes of inequality abroad—like corporate impunity or unfair trade deals. We equip people in Canada with tools and info they need to join us in lobbying our government for more just policies. We also work with partner organizations in Canada to push for fairer policies for people within our borders. Being a good global citizen starts with holding our own institutions accountable.
Which local organizations does Inter Pares work with?
Our counterparts include more than 70 groups focused on human rights, food sovereignty, health, economic justice and gender justice across Africa, Asia, Latin America and Canada. These partnerships are based on mutual learning, trust and a shared commitment to social justice. Together, we work to advance justice, build sustainable peace and globalize equality.
Is Inter Pares a feminist organization?
Yes! And more than that, Inter Pares is an intersectional feminist organisation. Addressing inequalities between genders and other social hierarchies like race and class is essential to creating long lasting change. Inter Pares also supports women’s leadership, gender justice and explicitly embraces trans inclusive feminism in its partnerships and programming.

How does Inter Pares put its own values into practice internally?
Inter Pares has a flat, co-management structure. All full-time staff are co-managers who share equal responsibility and participation in decision-making. This non-hierarchical, consensus-based model reflects our commitment to feminist values like equality, social justice and collective leadership.
