Gender equality in rural areas news : Updates November 08, 2023 Share Print For several years now, a worldwide feminist resistance movement has been organized by women from different countries around key issues for women's rights. Rural women play a leading role in this movement. From West Africa to Canada, rural women face a range of obstacles that prevent them from gaining access to the decision-making circles in which agricultural practices are developed. Poor land tenure security and women's difficult access to land are major obstacles to their involvement in these decisions. These women play a vital role in the economic development of their countries, particularly in West Africa, yet the distribution of income from their work is unfair and they do not really profit from the results of their labour. This is due, among other things, to the traditional roles imposed on them through a gender-based division of labour, which still assigns them the responsibility of domestic work and leaves them little time or resources to devote to their farming profession. This webinar addresses the challenges and struggles these women face, but also the trajectories of action and mobilization to break down the barriers of gender equality. Listen to this virtual conversation that took place on March 9, 2023 with Jenn Pfenning president of the National Farmers Union of Canada, Mariamé Ouattara gender expert and advocacy specialist from Burkina Faso and Debiya Ifra Sow environmental sociologist from Enda Pronat in Senegal.
