2013 Speakers Series: Developing justice – natural resources and fair economies

On April 22, 2013, Ahnan and Jennifer Moore discussed how they are advocating for just and sustainable development. Both women are supporting communities who are affected by large-scale natural resource projects, in a context of displacement and human rights violations. Together they shared strategies and reflections on how to promote justice for affected peoples.

This conference was hosted by Inter Pares as part of its Annual Speaker Series, an annual meeting where we convene activists from around the world and from here in Canada to share their views on the different issues Inter Pares addresses.

About our speakers

Ahnan is a Kachin activist from northern Burma, where armed conflict is still ongoing. She has been campaigning locally and internationally for seven years for protection of local communities’ lands and livelihoods against the damaging effects of gold and jade mining, mono-crop plantations and large dams. She manages campaigns for the Kachin Development Networking Group (KDNG), a network of Kachin civil society groups conducting research on development projects including mining, plantation agriculture and hydro power, and working with local communities to find local solutions to development problems. KDNG is one of the leading activist groups against the controversial Myitsone dam project. Ahnan is also the assistant coordinator of the Burma Rivers Network, a coalition of community based groups throughout Burma working for sustainable river development in Burma.

Jennifer Moore is the Latin America Program Coordinator at MiningWatch Canada, where she works on the Guatemala/Goldcorp campaign and on supporting communities, organizations, and networks struggling with mining issues throughout the region. Jennifer is a freelance print and broadcast journalist with twelve years' experience in social justice journalism, a third of which she has gained while living and working in Ecuador.
