Aujourd’hui, la Gendarmerie royale du Canada a annoncé qu’elle porte des accusations criminelles contre l'un des tortionnaires syriens de Maher Arar. Un mandat d’arrêt et une notice Interpol ont été émis, dans l’espoir d’amener le colonel George Salloum à faire face à la justice. Il s’agit d’une première au Canada. Arar a été illégalement remis par des officiers américains à la Syrie où il fut torturé et détenu sans inculpation pendant plus d'un an en 2002-2003. Les agents syriens ont admis plus tard qu’Arar était complètement innocent. Il a également été disculpé par la suite par une Commission d’enquête canadienne, qui a critiqué l’irresponsable partage d'information erronée par les organismes canadiens dans cette affaire. La Coalition pour la surveillance internationale des libertés civiles (CSILC), une coalition de laquelle Inter Pares est membre, a appuyé le cas de Maher Arar depuis le début, alors que celui-ci était incarcéré et torturé dans les prisons syriennes.
