Our Work: By region Burma About this region Burma has suffered under military dictatorship and civil war for over 50 years, characterized by systematic human rights abuses, and mass displacement. Political reform began in 2011, reducing repression and creating fragile ceasefires, but there remains a long way to go amid continued impunity and distrust. Civil society groups in conflict-affected areas have worked for decades on key issues. Our Work on this region We have worked with local organizations in Burma and refugee-receiving neighbours for over 20 years. Our program, supported by the Government of Canada through the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade & Development, assists over 60 local groups working on health services, human rights, environment, free media, and refugee relief. A key focus is coalition building for inter-ethnic understanding.
