The Immigrant Workers Centre to receive 2018 Peter Gillespie Social Justice Award news : Updates April 18, 2018 Share Print Peter Gillespie Social Justice Award: 2018 recipient - The Immigrant Workers Centre Credit: Kristina Corre Launched by the Canadian social justice organization Inter Pares, the Peter Gillespie Social Justice Award honours the social justice legacy of Peter Gillespie, a human rights activist who dedicated his life to advancing social justice in Canada and internationally. This year, Inter Pares is honored to give the award to the Immigrant Workers Centre, based in Montreal. Founded in 2000, the Immigrant Workers Centre (IWC) defends the rights of immigrants in their place of work and fights for dignity, respect, and justice. Some of their principal objectives include popular education about workers' rights, improving living and working conditions for immigrant workers and providing a safe place for immigrant workers to receive information, resources and referrals. This year, Inter Pares has chosen to honour a Canadian organization carrying out transformative work to address discrimination and social exclusion. The award will be given at 6:30 pm on April 23, at the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health, located at 299 Montreal Road, Vanier, Ottawa. Following the award, attendees will enjoy three amazing guest speakers talking about discrimination and social exclusion in Canada, followed by a playback theatre performance by The Living Histories Ensemble and The Phoenix Playback Theatre.
