CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS | Inter Pares and SUWRA launch Canadian civil society working group on Sudan

In recognition of the escalating crisis in Sudan, Inter Pares and Sudanese Women Rights Action (SUWRA) are coordinating a new working group on Sudan for Canadian civil society, to act as a forum for solidarity, exchange and action. The working group is calling for participants from civil society, including non-governmental organizations, Sudanese diaspora groups, students, etc.

The group’s first meeting will take place on July 4 (tentative date). 

The working group will be housed within the Women, Peace and Security Network – Canada, with regular hybrid meetings open to all. 

Inter Pares and SUWRA will coordinate meetings. In Ottawa, Inter Pares will provide regular, hybrid-enabled meeting space from August 2024 onwards.

Background to the civil society working group on Sudan

The escalating crisis in Sudan has caused mass displacement of the Sudanese population, resulting in the world's largest humanitarian catastrophe by numbers and an impending famine that could be the worst the world has seen in 40 years. The International Criminal Court has opened an urgent investigation into crimes against humanity in Darfur. 

The war continues to have profound impacts on Sudanese women and girls, in terms of displacement, conflict-related sexual violence, malnutrition and famine. Canadian civil society needs to come together with a stronger voice to call on the Canadian government to uphold its commitments as they relate to Sudan. 

About SUWRA and Inter Pares 

SUWRA and Inter Pares work to protect Sudanese women human rights defenders, to support Sudanese feminist civil society and to draw attention to the critical role women played in Sudan's peaceful revolution and towards building a future democracy. 

Inter Pares works with three locally-led Sudanese human rights organizations providing urgent aid to displaced women, youth and the Sudanese queer community, and has worked with Sudanese feminist civil society for more than 20 years.

SUWRA provides essential analysis of the situation in Sudan, and is actively engaged in humanitarian relief delivery.
