For two years, over 500 farmers from the different cotton-growing regions in Burkina Faso documented their experience with Monsanto’s Bt cotton. This three-year farmer-led research initiative, called “Bt Cotton and Us: The Truth from our Fields,” provides an important counterbalance, as Burkina Faso was the first country in West Africa to adopt genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and industry often lauds its success when promoting GMOs in other countries.

Come join us for the 4th night in our series of Inter Pares Film Nights. This month, we will be watching and discussing “The Hole Story,” the 2011 documentary by Quebec filmmakers Richard Desjardins and Robert Monderie. "The Hole Story" analyzes Canada's mining industry, particularly its impacts on the environment and workers’ health. After the film, several key activists in the mining justice movement will join us to answer questions and engage in a discussion.

On April 21st, we call on people to honour the memory of U Win Tin, the co-founder of Burma's National League for Democracy and one of the country's longest-serving political prisoners, by raising awareness and taking action for the release of political prisoners still in jail. Please wear a blue shirt or blue clothing, post pictures of yourself wearing blue on social media, and let people know that there are still political prisoners in jail, and that they need our support.

Come and join us for our 3rd edition of Inter Pares Film Nights. This month, we will be watching and discussing “El Contrato” (The Contract), a documentary by award-winning filmmaker, community artist, and teacher Min Sook Lee. “El Contrato” follows farmers from Central Mexico in their annual migration to southern Ontario to pick tomatoes. The documentary shines a light on the unfair working conditions of these migrant workers who come to Canada every year and who work under conditions that no local worker would accept.
